33 The beginning of the 21st century has led to a new digital era that has shown an increase in the consumption of different technological screen media by the population, making society increasingly sedentary and addicted to new technologies. There is a great social concern about how these changes are affecting the physical, psychological, social, and cognitive health of people, especially young people . First, it is important to define the concept of sedentary time and screen time because they are sometimes used interchangeably. According to the Sedentary Behaviour Research Network (Tremblay et al., 2017), sedentary behaviour refers to any waking behaviour characterized by an energy expenditure of ≤1.5 METs, while sitting, reclining, or lying down. Therefore, sedentary time refers to the total minutes spent in different sedentary behaviours such as eating or studying while sitting, etc., whether they are linked to screen use. However , screen time refers exclusively to the time spent on different screen media technology such as televisions, computers, cell phones, video consoles or tablets. Regarding sedentary time , no recommendations have been established to date on the maximum time it would be advisable for young people to remain seated during the day to avoid health risks. Despite this, different international organisations recommend limiting sitting time for prolonged periods.
